Hanging flower baskets in Cathedral Square.

Cathedral Square has Friends

Cathedral Square has seen many improvements this summer. The upgrades began in May when Robert W. Baird & Co. employees volunteered to spread mulch, paint the utility fence, and do other cleanup tasks. Taylor’s, on N. Jefferson and E. Wells streets, hosted a kick-off party for the Cathedral Square Friends, helping to raise over $1,300 for beautifying the Square. A long list of area businesses donated raffle items to help in the fundraising effort, the businesses are listed at the end of the story. And back in February, This Is It! raised over $600 for Cathedral Square Friends. Cathedral Square has many great friends.

The Parks Departments planted new bushes and encircled them with white fencing which park users are very happy to see. Just before Jazz in the Park got underway for the summer, sixteen large baskets filled with colorful flowers, grasses, and vines were hung on poles inside and along the edges of the Square. After a summer of growth, the plantings are now at their peak and have been drawing rave reviews from park visitors. The flower baskets were the result of the first year of our successful Color the Square campaign.

Kiewit Construction, the streetcar contractor, donated huge amounts of red granite to replace the dirt along the Square between the sidewalks and curbs. Milwaukee County employees spent significant amounts of time and effort in working on this project. The granite is more attractive than dirt and weeds and it eliminates muddy conditions in wet weather.

An upcoming event, PARKing Day on Friday, September 21, will see the Cathedral Square Friends hosting a space on N. Jefferson Street on the Square for music and games. Stop by and visit with us between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Exciting news for children, young and old, is that in late October, the play set area will be replaced. The sand will give way to bouncy new material that will be more sanitary, and new equipment to climb and play on will be installed by the Parks Department. New swings, the most popular playground equipment, will also be installed.

The premier sponsors of the new hanging baskets deserve a special round of applause. They are:
